Getting a new job wasn't as easy as I thought it would be. Everybody wanted “experience”, which apparently isn't what my college education was. After months of applying to jobs on-line and handing out my resume to over 50 places, I became a little discouraged. But the key was that I kept on keeping on. I made a plan on the various steps I could take to get that experience. My desired field was writing, so I took a free journalism course that a local newspaper was offering, wrote for a few literature oriented websites such as Helium, and offered volunteer services to a writing website. When I was finished building up my resume for a bit, I hit the job market once again. Though nothing landed in my lap right away, it did eventually. I am now working for the Community Newspaper Company as an Editorial Assistant. And better yet, I love my job. The answer was not giving up. Though I was disheartened at times and took breaks from trying, I got back on that proverbial horse. If you want something bad enough, you will eventually get it. Just think of the path you need to take to get to your goal, and walk it. Kelly’s work can be viewed at http://www.helium.com/users/58594 |

With college comes this illusion that you will be set for life after graduation. While with some occupations this is true, it is usually not the case. I'm a living example of this. Seven years ago I began working in a dead-end job while I was a senior in high school. I figured it would be a great job while I was going to college. It had benefits and everything, even though it was only part-time.
