Sacramento, California - Governor Schwarzenegger Discusses Memorial Day in Weekly Radio Address
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger:
Hi, this is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with another California Report.
This weekend we celebrate Memorial Day.
We’ll enjoy spending time with our families.
We might take short trips out of town.
Many of us will have Monday off.
But it’s also important to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.
It’s a time when we honor those brave members of our armed forces, who gave their lives defending the freedoms that we all enjoy.
President Reagan called America the Shining City on a Hill and he was right.
The light of America’s freedom is bright and people all over the world see this nation as hope, as opportunity, as the one place where determination and hard work can come together to let dreams come true.
As a young man in Austria, I was drawn by America’s bright light.
I had big dreams and I knew that this was the place to make them happen.
But all the things that make America great, come at a price.
Over the centuries, in conflicts at home and overseas American soldiers, sailors, airmen
and marines, have fought to protect our liberties and our way of life.
Many of them gave their lives.
So if we cherish our way of life, then we must remember their sacrifice.
So this weekend, enjoy the holiday.
But also, please take, some time, to reflect and to honor those men and women who have served and sacrificed to keep America strong and free.
Thank you for watching and thank you for listening.
