To Insure or Not to Insure? by Jerry Maldonado PDF Print E-mail

Are we a nation of dummies, or do we have dummies running this nation? I keep asking myself that question as yet another regulatory law is getting pushed through our government without us having any say in the matter.

I can speak for many with much discontent as America is looking and acting like our allies overseas. Big government and big taxes are creating an atmosphere that is not good to do business in. Isn’t this the reason why so many people migrated here to get away from a controlling government in the first place? You be the judge of that one.

Seriously though, insurance is something everyone needs. Why is it that every area of insurance is made affordable except health insurance? We have almost 300 million people who need it, but because employers have provided health coverage for so many years it has ballooned beyond affordability to the majority of the country.

What if we, (Americans) all had to buy our own health insurance? In other words, what if we took that 300 million and had insurance companies compete the same way for business as they do for our other insurance needs? Even better, lets open the pot to international companies as well. I guarantee the competition would be breaking the door down for your business and you would see prices fall as a result.

My point on this typing rant is simple. Insurance costs are killing employers with costs they don’t need and a perk that Americans have been spoiled with for a very long time. From a business stand point I can relate to the overhead involved with providing coverage for my employee’s. Let’s get rid of this perk and have Americans take responsibility for themselves.

Insurance companies would still have the upper hand as they would write polices based on a person’s lifestyle just like they do for life insurance, but this could be the best medicine. You want a person to stop smoking or lose weight. Have them pay for their own health insurance and watch the magic happen. Instead of 70 million smokers and almost half the country overweight you would see a dramatic change with the power of the all mighty dollar.

We live in one of the most competitive and free societies on the planet. I often ask myself why the heath industry received a free pass to basically charge whatever they want to offer. This type of business practice would not be accepted in other areas of the business world. Add some competition and watch things change.

There are many ways to solve this problem to benefit everyone and I’ve just scratched the surface on one of them. Our biggest problem is our representatives/politicians who need to stop pandering to the health industry and start working for the people. If every American would perform their civic duty and vote; our country would be a lot different than it is today. Big business is good for this country in so many ways, but when a monopoly is created, like we have in the health industry, we lose control and many Americans suffer as a result.

The 2010 elections are going to be one of change and politicians know this. Capital Hill and Congress are working day and night to pass every conceivable law that will not help Americans, but hurt them. We; as Americans, need to stop this over the top spending and let politicians know that we can take care of ourselves.
