As 30 million watched a memorial for a fallen pop star, a cargo plane was unloading fallen war heroes. Adding insult to injury during this media infatuation twenty soldiers were killed overseas, but you rarely heard their stories. Unfortunately, it takes mass casualties to get coverage that eventually end up becoming political talking points for re-election campaigns. These past few weeks prove that people who report the news are out of touch with the reality of what is going on in this world. It is hard to imagine what our soldiers are thinking as they sacrifices their lives to help others be free and to keep us safe. I guess they are the only ones that can answer that question. Why can’t America become the great nation it was after 9/11? I remember street corners filled with flag waving supporters and homes and cars draped with American pride. Everywhere you went the support for our country was endless. Where has that pride gone? Was it a fad? Why has it stopped? Every public servant gets up everyday knowing they have a duty and honor to uphold. Whether it is patrolling the streets, patrolling the boarders, fighting fires, or fighting the enemy these brave souls will always have a place in my heart and millions as well. It is these people that should be reported. It is these people that honor America. Most important, what have we become as a nation? Have we become a nation of tabloids and non stop coverage of a President who constantly has to explain himself? Or are we a nation that lives by the belief of Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness? You be the judge. I hope the millions who serve read this column and understand that the majority of Americans have not forgotten the media has. We pray for you everyday and honor your sacrifices. Our country was shaped by your efforts and America’s media outlets must wake up to acknowledge it more. © Jerry Maldonado 2009 all rights reserved - This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |

It is sad to think that the media has forgotten our heroes, but it’s true. Our military efforts and countless public servants who risk their lives everyday now have to fight for the headlines they deserve.
