My belief was put to the test last week as my youngest daughter was stricken with an awful stomach flu. Throughout the long week we endured many sleepless nights, trips to the bathroom, and watched the sunrise many times. Even as a seasoned veteran of overnight work, these sleepless nights were starting to take their toll on me. During one of our overnight breaks between runs; pardon the pun, I did like most in these situations and channel surfed. Between the infomercials and boring reruns I came across a celebrity home show that featured a professional driver from NASCAR. Usually this show features pompous celebrities waving champagne bottles in your face as they brag about their millions, but not this guy. He came across as humble and grateful while he showed off his elaborate home. What surprised me was his simple secret to success. In several rooms throughout the house he pointed out a piece of notebook paper taped in various places with a simple hand written phrase, “I Can, I Will” in large letters. He didn’t care if these notes matched his elaborate decor; he wanted to remind himself to keep striving for more. Most of us already follow his simple philosophy, but we do it the wrong way. In other words, we use trinkets, pictures, or magnets with similar quotes and phrases. These things marketed with cookie cutter words just don’t have the powerful personal touch that is needed to give us a push. There is nothing more inspiring than your own message with your own words. Daily reminders like the one our successful NASCAR driver uses is the best life coach anyone could have. I encourage all of you to follow your dreams and ambitions by telling yourself many times a day “I Can, I Will.” You will be amazed by the results. No matter how much we learn throughout our lives about success only we can inspire ourselves. As for my little one; she’s back to normal and doing well. It is amazing how being forced into uncomfortable positions or circumstances can lead to such a positive life lesson. I, like many of you, am a true believer in the notion that everything happens for a reason. Unfortunately, this was not always the case, but I am sure glad I’ve changed.
